Onam
Kerala’s colourful harvest festival, Onam, commemorates the return of the mythical King Mahabali with lavish feasts, boat races, and folk dances. During the ten-day Onam celebration, elaborate floral displays called Pookalam are shown, demonstrating the artistic talent of the Keralan people. During Onam, traditional dances like Thiruvathirakali enthral onlookers as the Chenda drum’s rhythmic beats fill Kerala’s streets. A gastronomic spectacle comprising a wide variety of delectable vegetarian meals, Onam’s feast is served on banana leaves and symbolizes the abundance of the harvest season. Teams of rowers compete furiously on Kerala’s tranquil backwaters during the famous Vallam Kali, or snake boat race, which takes place around Onam and attracts spectators from all over the world.
Ganesh Chaturthi
The lively holiday of Ganesh Chaturthi, which honours Lord Ganesha, is celebrated with great devotion as intricately carved idols are placed in homes and public pandals and worshipped. Enchanting sounds of traditional drums resonating across the streets, joyful processions, and devotional singing all highlight the ten-day celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi. The aroma of modaks and other traditional sweets fills houses on Ganesh Chaturthi as offerings are made in honour of the much-loved elephant-headed god. During the event, which represents fresh starts and the removal of barriers, worshippers ask Lord Ganesha for his blessings on success, prosperity, and knowledge. The great immersion ceremony held on Ganesh Chaturthi, in which idols are submerged in bodies of water, represents the cycle of creation and disintegration and is a display of devotion and unity.
Devotees admire the gorgeous Ganesh idols artisans create over several months, exhibiting their talent and ingenuity. The idols are then exquisitely embellished. To preserve the sacredness of the celebration while protecting the environment, an increasing number of people are participating in the eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi movement by making idols and decorations out of biodegradable materials. As people from all walks of life come together to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, it fosters a spirit of friendship and collective worship.
